In the vibrant Berlin district of Neukölln, lies the iconic Hufeisensiedlung, a horseshoe-shaped estate that we had the pleasure of showcasing in a promotional video in the early summer of 2022. The district office of Neukölln commissioned our film agency to create a one-of-a-kind video for the tourism industry, and we were thrilled to take on the task. Over the course of three days, we captured stunning exterior shots of the estate and conducted interviews with its residents to create a compelling visual story.
As we embarked on this project, I had the opportunity to delve into the history of the Hufeisensiedlung and learn from the fascinating firsthand accounts of the eyewitnesses we interviewed. The film crew consisted of the talented cameraman Frank Creutz, the visionary director Alex, and myself as the dedicated assistant. Our team thoroughly enjoyed the shoot and relished the chance to showcase the unique beauty of the Hufeisensiedlung.
As with any exterior shoot, the weather can make or break the final product. Thankfully, we were blessed with sunny weather during the entirety of the shoot, enabling us to focus solely on capturing the essence of the estate on camera. Along with the buildings and parks, we filmed at a weekly market, in apartments, and gardens, experimenting with new perspectives and shots that added to the overall dynamic nature of the film. The end result is a unique video that captures the essence of the Hufeisensiedlung and showcases its distinctive character.
Editing the film proved to be a challenging yet rewarding experience, as we strived to weave the diverse interviews seamlessly into the three-minute video. With each interview being unique, it was essential to create a smooth transition between each section. I worked on the initial rough cuts myself and then collaborated with Alex to finish the final product. The color grading was tweaked several times to create different effects in the film, and after just one or two weeks, we had a finished product that we were proud of. Overall, I believe that the Hufeisensiedlung promotional video truly captures the essence of this iconic estate and showcases its unique style to the world.
